I don't remember any clues from the manga that it was a camera. I always just assumed it was a binocular so he could see from high up. I'm not sure why the anime has it clicking and stuff...

I'm a little confused on how to read this. Does it go up-down, left-right, right-left?

The camera part hit me as funny too. Good to have you confirm that it might not be in the manga. I thought I was forgetting things.

(It is left side first, go down. Then right side, and go down. I realized the problem of drawing anime fanart with US comic ordering after I posted. Duh.)

It's in the manga, and it's a scope. The clicking could just be the lens zooming in bit by bit.
